Just finished the last of the new orchestral pieces to be debuted on Christmas Eve with Performance Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra conducted by Joe Illick - so exciting hearing new music come to life!!
And another one of those traditions is to bring in world-renowned guests to headline the concerts.
In the Christmas Eve case, that headliner is only 13 years old, but pianist and composer Emily Bear has performed around the world – and two years ago in Santa Fe.
A resident of Rockford, Ill., the girl had appeared on “60 Minutes” and played at Carnegie Hall and Ravinia by the time she was 6 years old, Illick said, who added that her family discovered her gift when she was just a toddler and was picking out a piece by ear on the piano that she had heard her older sister practicing.
Disney has approached her about composing film scores, Illick added.
And, unlike some accomplished young musicians, she doesn’t just play the notes correctly, but reaches down into the heart of a piece of music, he said. “She plays someone else’s music as if she were creating it,” Illick said.
And she has been composing her own pieces for years. “The ideas she has are totally original,” he said. “Most of us compose by mimicking and altering (works that already exist), but she comes out with a new kind of idea that no one has had before.”
Bear’s compositions often are a mixture of classical and jazz styles, he said, adding that Quincy Jones has been bringing her to the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
At the Santa Fe concert, she will be playing a few of her own compositions, as well as Billy Strayhorn’s “Take the A Train,” Bart Howard’s “Fly Me to the Moon,” and George Gershwin’s much-loved “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Emily posted the article on fb
Article in the Albuquerque Journal about the concert this Christmas Eve with Performance Santa Fe and conductor Joe Illick - Can't believe it's been 2 years since the last concert there! Can't wait to go back to Santa Fe - going to be a great night! Premiering 3 new pieces!! www.abqjournal.com/510447/entertainment/spirit-2.html
"Thirteen-year-old pianist and composer Emily Bear is already deep into her career. She began composing when she was three; really got rolling professionally at four, when a noted national publisher started releasing her music; and made her debut as a solo pianist at Chicago’s Ravinia Festival with a 40-minute recital of classical music, jazz, and original compositions at five. At six, she appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (her first of six visits there), which lifted her to national celebrity. She currently works with several private teachers in Chicago and New York, honing her skills in piano performance and jazz improvisation. She’ll join the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra, conducted by Joseph Illick, for that group’s annual Christmas Eve concert, performing as the soloist in Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and playing some of her own compositions. Also on the program is Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5. The concert takes place at the Lensic Performing Arts Center "

Soooo excited to be back in Santa Fe for the concert on Christmas Eve with Perfomance Santa Fe Orchestra! Look what I found when we took a walk this afternoon
@don are you able to get the 2 pictures ( the painting and Emily and the Orchestra)
The painting... "It's a bit of a hot mess, but in such a wonderful way it really just reminds me of life."—Charles Peacock, about Rhapsody in Blue. You can hear Rhapsody in Blue on Christmas Eve in Santa Fe performed by Emily Bear and the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra.
The best 30 minutes you can spend hearing about George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue is this episode of Soul Music from BBC Radio 4: BBC Radio 4: Soul Music: Rhapsody in Blue.
Musical analysis, Gershwin’s biography, and personal memories are beautifully intertwined against the backdrop of this iconic work. The piece features interviews with Professor of Music Howard Pollock and musician Moby.
If you’d rather read than listen, here’s an article about the 90th anniversary performance in New York: The Telegraph: Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin is celebrated
Rachmaninoff and Ernest Bloch were there 90 years ago when Rhapsody in Blue was first heard on February 12, 1924, in New York’s Aeolian Hall.
You can be there when Rhapsody in Blue is played in Santa Fe by 13-year-old virtuoso pianist and composer Emily Bear as part of our Christmas Eve Concert. Joseph Illick conducts the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra.
An affordable, family-friendly preview of the dress rehearsal of our Christmas Eve Concert is at 2pm.
No @trini she will not play Tchaikowksy-
"Capture the magic of the season with two of the most cherished orchestral works of all time: Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5 performed by the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra and conducted by Joseph Illick, and Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue played by 13-year-old virtuoso pianist and composer Emily Bear."

Child prodigy plays alongside Performance Santa Fe Orchestra
Pianist and composer 13-year-old Emily Bear will appear with the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra on Christmas Eve. Pianist and composer 13-year-old Emily Bear will appear with the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra on Christmas Eve.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — At first blush, Emily Bear may seem like an ordinary home-schooled 13-year-old.
But a second look will tell you that Emily is an extraordinary and gifted girl. That’s because she squeezes more than eighth-grade textbooks in her studies at her family’s home in Rockford, Ill.
Emily makes time to practice piano, to write and arrange compositions, and to compose film scores.
And she gets out of the house … to perform at far-flung concerts. She will lead her trio – yes, her trio – at The Iridium jazz club in New York City next month.
“The chemistry is really great,” Emily said in a phone interview. “When we all play together it sounds like one person.”
But before that gig, Emily will be the guest pianist with the Performance Santa Fe Orchestra at a Christmas Eve concert at Santa Fe’s Lensic Performing Arts Center.
“I love traveling and playing concerts. It’s really fun to do,” Emily said.
She and the orchestra will perform George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” Her mother, Andrea Bear, said Emily thinks of it as “her dream piece” because it combines jazz and classical music.
For the same concert, Emily has composed a new piece, “Les Voyages,” and has written an orchestration and expansion of her work “Northern Lights.”
The original piano version of “Northern Lights,” which is on her “Diversity” CD, won an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Competition Award when she was 6 years old.
Andrea Bear said one of the highlights of her daughter’s musical life was playing with the orchestra in Santa Fe two years ago. That concert saw the premiere of Emily’s piece “Santa Fe.”
“It takes a lot of courage and faith in the conductor and for Emily to work together to bring new works to life,” she said. “Joe Illick and his orchestra are phenomenal.”
Andrea Bear has said that when Emily was a baby she would sing back lullabies in perfect pitch; at 18 months she experimented at the piano; at age 3 she composed substantial pieces; and as a 4-year-old Hal Leonard, a major music publishing company, began publishing her compositions.
Quincy Jones, one of the nation’s preeminent record producers, is Emily’s mentor and the producer of the “Diversity” album. Jones was quoted as saying that he is “at once astounded and inspired by the enormous talent Emily embodies… She plays like she’s 40 years old. She is the complete 360-degree package, and there are no limits to the musical heights she can reach.”
At the same Christmas Eve concert, Emily and the orchestra will play two jazz standards and her arrangement of a Christmas medley. In addition, the orchestra will perform Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.

Ursula: Unfortunately I can't read the German forum. Sigh. Too bad they haven't said anything. You'd think their lawyers would come out with a statement at the least. And they keep posting on social media like everything is normal.
Sept 7, 2022 23:14:39 GMT -6
Ursula: Also why is that other forum in German. Why not English?
Sept 7, 2022 23:15:55 GMT -6
eulenspiegel2: it is a German forum...about German pop singer... you may be surprised...but the USA is not the center of the world - it is like US people coming to Europe wondering why not signs in English ..

ursus: Ursula, Google Translate works very well if you translate from German into English and you just need to understand the meaning of what was written. It does still require an understanding of German if you want to use it to post in that language.

ursus: IIRC B&B's lawyers have until 9/23 to respond to the lawsuit. It would not make sense for them to make a public statement before that. B&B themselves have undoubtedly been instructed not to say anything either. That makes sense to me.

mastersgttom: For the benefit of all the members and the guests who visit this site be advised that there is a You Tube video out there of Barlow and Bear doing a live stream. The video was posted by Epic Wonderland. Where she got it I have no clue.
Mar 8, 2024 12:53:33 GMT -6
mastersgttom: The video of the live stream cannot be found on any of their social media platforms. At least from any of my feeble attempts. The video is a bit hard to watch because the audio is totally out of sync with the video.

mastersgttom: What I got out of the video was that it had nothing to do with Moana. They were very mum about their work on that movie. Bling Ring came up in some of the comments. A bit odd that they have a live stream out there, writing music, and not making it public.
