To be honest, I am done with Nikki Yanofsky. I was overwhelmed when I heard her singing "Airmail Special" at age 12. And I have 3 CD's of her. BUT: - her scatting was a perfect copy, not an improvisation. - she is not able to improvise, therefore she lacks a fundamential skill necessary for a jazz singer. Look at her poor performance as a member of Quincy Jones "Gumbo All Star Band", singing "Girl from Ipanema" (by the way my first encounter with Emily...) - Her idol is Aretha Franklin. But she is a belter, she can reach the high notes only if she begins to cry. - Not only she is a mediocre singer, it seems that she is a bit arrogant: She means that she is a natural born superstar, pefect from the beginning. No need for any further training, education or practising. There is the same humming and crying than 10 years ago. - She murdered the national anthem. Her rendition of "O Canada" during the opening ceremony of the winter olympics in Vancouver has been really bad. As we say in Germany, "unterirdisch". Have you really looked at the posts of this thread - I really doubt.Did you see her videos here from France, btw there is another Anthem Performance in this thread. We all don't know how Ella Fitzgerald sounded as a 20year old. What I have seen so far of her - one of her main problems that she is not a little bit arrogant. She is the well- raised, nice to all people, well-educated young woman who misses a bit of assertiveness. When I saw her performance at the dancing show I was shocked. They nearly hid her - perhaps it was "Marty McFlys" mother - the actress who did not wanted that Nikki Yanofsky would outperform her with her voice. Emily and her mother! have much more assertiveness - thats very important! Btw. Ideacity uploaded on youtube

I have been busy these days, so I am a bit late with my answer for you, Eulenspiegel..
Why your insinuation that I've not seen the Video you posted the link to? I was somewhat obsessed with Nikki Yanofsky for years, I downloaded and ripped all songs and videos I could find. So, yes, I have watched almost all videos of her on YT. And I gave her latest songs a try. But I see no reason to change my mind.
I waited for a breaktrough of this Girl that never came. And at some point (maybe as I saw Nikkis performance at the Vancouver Winter Olympics) I realized that there will probably never a breaktrough for her because she is not good enough in comparison to her competitors. If neither Quincy Jones can help her, nor the money of her parents or the chance to sing the national Anthem…
So I left her behind. There are so many highly skilled, hard working and well trained singers out there worth to listen to that there is no need to stick with a dream that probably never will come true.
So I will come to my last point: I have no problem that you seem very, very convinced of your own opinion and your own taste regarding music. And I am thankfull that you are a member that is busy to keep this board alive. Forgive me if I am a bit unfriendly, but it seems that if you post a video of an artist that you like and someone else (like me) is not so convinced, there is only two possible reasons that you are considering: I did not really see the video, or I am somewhat clueless. Otherwise I would have felt in love with this artist like you did. There is no way that someone has some taste in music and has an other opinion than you.
P.S. I forgot to ask you: Did you give the links in my post with some of my favorate artists a try? With Rhiannon Giddens among others? I am pretty sure you did not.

So you do not listen to her album Little Secrets produced by Quincy Jones, her performances in recent years. I did not know Nikki Yanofsky till 2011/12? Here are many videos etc. in this thread long after 2010 - as I said - Nikki Yanofsky was unknown to me. Btw. there were some Rhiannon Giddens videos already here - linked by me Yes about taste there is no discussion but perhaps listening tomthe Nikki Yanofsky videos I posted would be a good idea. But thanks now I am convinced that at leasr you never watched any video I posted here in off topic.

Her new album is truly amazing! It's called "Turn Down the Sound." She worked with Michael Jackson's producer Rod Temperton on it and it was his last project before he died. The title track and "Bubbles" are amazing!
