If you haven’t heard of Emily Bear yet, you will soon.
Eleven-year-old Emily Bear caught the attention of music legend Quincy Jones with her amazing musical talents. Emily composes, orchestrates, and performs classical and jazz music for listeners around the world. With the help of Quincy Jones, the recording artist debuted her first album, Diversity, with Concord Records/Quest Records. Diversity is available now on iTunes.
CelebSecrets4U recently chatted with Emily to hear about her incredible musical journey, performing at Carnegie Hall, and her love for camping! Check out the full Q&A below…
CS4U: So you began playing music practically right out of the womb. You are a pianist and composer. Wow, that is amazing! Not many children your age have that talent so it is very impressive. What inspired you at such an early age to pursue music and keep doing what you loved?
Emily Bear: “It kinda seems like I’ve been around music since I was born because all my siblings and my mom all played music so we had a piano and I would always be attracted to it and loved making sounds on it – then I started making up songs and found my favorite thing was composing! I have always loved making up music.”
CS4U: The music you play, Mozart and Jazz, are usually music that not many kids your age would listen to. What attracted you to that music? Did you grow up listening to this music or would your parents play this type of music for you as a small child?
Emily Bear: “When I was 5 my mom showed me some pieces in a jazz book we had at the piano. I liked them right away and started learning “My Funny Valentine”, “All the Things You Are”, “The Girl From Ipanema” and others. I never heard these songs before but I loved them right away and wanted to play them – Big Band style and jazz standards are still my favorite music to listen to. I think classical music is the foundation for all piano technique and there is so much classical music in so many different styles – spanish, baroque, etc. that there is always something fun to learn.”
CS4U: You’ve been on Ellen, Good Morning America, performed at The White House, and even Carnegie Hall. You’ve finally recorded your album “Diversity”. Tell me more about your album and that successes that have come out of it?
Emily Bear: “Diversity is my first CD for Concord Music Label and Quincy Jones produced it – which was totally awesome! It is all original songs that I composed and are recorded with jazz trio: Bass (Carlitos del Puerto), Drums (Francisco Mela) & for some of the ballads – Zuill Bailey on cello. Diversity just reached #3 on Billboard and we had so much fun performing at the CD Launch concerts in LA, NYC & Chicago. I loved recording the album and it has quite a diverse assortment of musical styles from Salsa to mood pieces – all tied together with a jazz influence.”
CS4U: Can you tell us about your recording experience?
Emily Bear: “It has been such an amazing process. Working with Quincy was a dream and everything he suggested added so much. The album was recorded at West Lake Studios where Quincy and Michael Jackson recorded BAD. Everyone was great and I loved working with Carlitos and Mela. A lot of the pieces have special parts that were added during the recording process as I would get more ideas hearing the trio.”
CS4U: Now next month you are headed to Tokyo, Japan to perform at Blue Note Tokyo as part of Quincy Jones—The 80th Celebration Live Gala Party. Tell us more about this event and how excited are you? What can people expect from this performance?
Emily Bear: “I absolutely love performing live and cannot wait to visit Japan, see the culture of the country and perform at such an amazing venue. Right before that we are performing at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland & in Korea. It’s always fun to perform with Quincy and I can’t wait to clebrate his 80th Birthday!”
CS4U: Summer is here! Do you have any plans for the summer?
Emily Bear: “I just got back from NYC where I attended the ASCAP/NYU Steinhardt Film Scoring workshop. I got to compose the music for part of a film, orchestrate it and have it recorded live with an orchestra. I chose a science fiction film and it was an amazing experience!
I am now at summer camp for 2 weeks. My favorite activities are rock climbing, waterskiing and arts & crafts. They also have cooking classes & lots of other activities. The girls in my bunk are really nice and I have great counselors!”

maybe those complaints did come from people which are not members of this forum so they could not send message directly to you. Don didn't tell that they came from this forum. However, don't analyze their source.
As for dead forum. This forum has only few active members. And nobody can force others to discuss if they don't want, don't have a time, don't have a mood or are not of such (chatty) type. If they like forum as an updated pdf then you probably will not change it. I was posting a lot before you came and I know a bit how it works here and a bit how you feel. However, I told you once don't expect big response.
Maybe this forum is not like many others you know but it probably satisfies most of members. And although I wanted to respond to many posts so far I didn't have time for that lately.
And as for your posting and those complaints it is good to find reasonable balance between on and off topic posts. If people come here they probably would like to read mainly about things related to Emily as this forum is devoted to her. I don't want from you to stop posting off topic posts (I also sent a lot of them) but just to find balance. If there is a long sequence of off topic posts it probably will not look good. It is my opinion and you may or may not agree with me.
I just wanted to update event list and I see you already did that. Thanks. I added NBC and Voice of America Radio. Now we are waiting for WGN and London. However, there is "gap" between Montreux and Korea on July 23.
I can disclose that I already ordered hotel in Montreux, so I would like to go there to see Emily, just to choose some seat and buy ticket.
47th Montreux Jazz Festival July 21, 2013 - Auditorium Stravinski Closing Night The Official European Quincy Jones 80th Birthday Special in Tribute to Claude Nobs Feat. Patti Austin, James Ingram, Siedah Garrett, Nikki Yanofsky, Emily Bear, Alfredo Rodriguez, Andreas Varady, Justin Kauflin, Backed by the In The House Band, led by Musical Director Greg Phillinganes. With the Pepe Leinhard big band
I wish you always had a beautiful time her on forum. Those of you who already posted some comments here thanks you joined us actively. I believe all of you are inpatient for Emily's new CD to hold it in your hands and listen to it. And if someone of you can attend some of concerts Emily will promote her new CD we can only envy.
I think there is "Preview" function when you create new post. Maybe it is not completely preview but it depicts images and you can even edit message in that mode. Use button "Visual" below the post, next to "BBCode".
Two days ago I noticed that there is also "Like" button on this board. Nice.
eulenspiegel2: most things have some delay because of the custom service...and very likely Emily and Abigail did not pay for speed shifting/transport...

Ursula: Unfortunately I can't read the German forum. Sigh. Too bad they haven't said anything. You'd think their lawyers would come out with a statement at the least. And they keep posting on social media like everything is normal.

Ursula: Also why is that other forum in German. Why not English?

eulenspiegel2: it is a German forum...about German pop singer... you may be surprised...but the USA is not the center of the world - it is like US people coming to Europe wondering why not signs in English ..

ursus: Ursula, Google Translate works very well if you translate from German into English and you just need to understand the meaning of what was written. It does still require an understanding of German if you want to use it to post in that language.

ursus: IIRC B&B's lawyers have until 9/23 to respond to the lawsuit. It would not make sense for them to make a public statement before that. B&B themselves have undoubtedly been instructed not to say anything either. That makes sense to me.

mastersgttom: For the benefit of all the members and the guests who visit this site be advised that there is a You Tube video out there of Barlow and Bear doing a live stream. The video was posted by Epic Wonderland. Where she got it I have no clue.
Mar 8, 2024 12:53:33 GMT -6
mastersgttom: The video of the live stream cannot be found on any of their social media platforms. At least from any of my feeble attempts. The video is a bit hard to watch because the audio is totally out of sync with the video.

mastersgttom: What I got out of the video was that it had nothing to do with Moana. They were very mum about their work on that movie. Bling Ring came up in some of the comments. A bit odd that they have a live stream out there, writing music, and not making it public.

mastersgttom: Wow! I just noticed that it has been a little over a year since anyone has posted anything in this Shoutbox. Eluenspiegel was the last one. I messaged him this discovery a week ago but haven't heard back. He used to be the most active member here.
